HOW CORONA AFFECTS LIFE AT GimJes

Introduction

The aim of this report is giving readers insight into how the life of students at Gimnazija Jesenice has changed with COVID-19 pandemic. At the end are a few of my thoughts and speculations on the subject.

Life before corona

Before the pandemic, education at GimJes was rather traditional. Apart from a few essays, reports and articles a year, all the work (homework, knowledge checks, tests etc.) was given in by hand on a piece of paper. Time was much more scarce, however.

Life with corona

As students are not allowed go to school during the pandemic, distance learning was introduced by teachers. Most of them demand students to report back on their newly gained knowledge at least once a week. At least once every two weeks, though some more regularly, teachers assemble some a kind of a knowledge check for teenagers to answer and send back for assessment. It is said that these checks will affect the final mark, so most, but certainly not all, complete their duties as required. In addition to completing their tasks, students now have time to spend with their friends and family and be active, discovering new hobbies and much more.

Return to normal

As of 20th of May, it is not yet known when educational facilities will return to normal. Both, students and teachers, speculate that it will not happen this school year so marks will have to be finalized trough this new system.

My thoughts

I think that learning and working like that is, though less stressful, harder and we learn less than if we were in schools. That considering, I think most people would like life to return to normal. It is especially stressful for those who have lost their jobs and those who have to work overtime for life to not collapse completely. That said, there is something comforting knowing that I do not have to wake up tomorrow at 6 am and go to school.
